About our project

Melksham Remembers is a community project funded and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Melksham Area Board and Melksham Town Council.

The aim of the project is to explore Melksham and the surrounding parishes’* role in the First World War 1914-18. It is not just about the fallen and celebrated heroes, but also the work of the community on the ‘home front.’

* The Melksham area includes: Atworth, Broughton Gifford, Bulkington, Great Hinton, Keevil, Melksham, Melksham Without, Poulshot, Seend, Semington and Steeple Ashton.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with this exciting project commemorating the people, places and events in the Melksham and surrounding villages during the 1914-1918 years. To find out more please see our Volunteers Needed page.  [download MS Word]  [download .pdf]

Your stories

We need YOUR stories! The project aims to gather reminiscences and stories at a number of community events and locations. We need help from the community as we seek to find out about the people places and events of the First World War in Atworth, Broughton Gifford, Melksham, Melksham Without, Steeple Ashton, Bulkington, Keevil, Great Hinton, Poulshot, Semington and Seend. Perhaps your granny told you a story or you have discovered something about the place you live or work? Do you have an interesting photo that tells a story? Perhaps you have been doing your own research and would like to share it with us. We want to hear all about it.

The first opportunity will be on Thursday 9 November at Melksham Library between 3pm – 7pm. Drop in and meet members of the team and share your story with us.
